Memento screening
2016-Sep-22 @ 20:00 - 21:53
The Dryden will screen Memento (Christopher Nolan, U.S. 2000, 113 min., 35mm).
Memento's reverse-motion opening scene immediately questions the role and reliability of photographs (and popular media) in the construction of memories. Leonard, brilliantly portrayed by Guy Pearce, suffers from anterograde amnesia and is unable to store recent memories. Eager to uncover the truth behind his wife's murder, he conducts his own investigation using a system of notes, Polaroid photos, and tattoos. Nolan presents two timelines; a chronological one in black-and-white and a reversed order in color, ultimately conveying a neo-noir style to the story. Both an exploration of modern photographic technologies and systems of memories, Memento is a tense psychological thriller captured in a strikingly open-ended innovative structure.
