Volunteers from Wild Wings Inc. team up with Melissa Hart, author of the middle-grade novel Avenging the Owl (Sky Pony, 2016) for a family-friendly hour that's all about owls. Activities include the humorous "Raptors Rule!" slideshow, a brief reading from Hart's novel, a Q&A with a live owl from Wild Wings, and a short nature writing exercise. Hart will discuss the weird and wonderful eight years she spent volunteering at her local raptor center, and how she came to write Avenging the Owl. As contributing editor at The Writer Magazine and the author of three books and hundreds of articles and essays, she'll also provide hand-outs and answer questions about how young writers can start publishing their creative work professionally. Wild Wings volunteers will talk about the importance of owls to the environment and to the food chain, and how rehabilitation centers play a critical part in protecting these important birds of prey.
