La hora de los hornos (The Hour of the Furnaces) screening

2015-Oct-16 @ 18:00 - 22:20

The Dryden will screen La hora de los hornos (The Hour of the Furnaces, Octavio Getino and Fernando Solanas, Argentina 1968, 260 min., 16mm, Spanish, English, and Portuguese w/ subtitles).

With the Marxist notion of violence as a necessary catalyst of social change at the center, Fernando E. Solanas and Octavio Getino's monolithic document of neocolonialism in Latin America exemplifies what the directors termed a "Third Cinema," following the commercial and auteur cinemas that viewers have been trained to expect. Told in three parts, 1. Neocolonialism and Violence, 2. Act for Liberation, and 3. Violence and Liberation, this audacious, hard-hitting call to action was surreptitiously shot between 1966 and 1968 and screened underground to anarchists and revolutionaries fighting a military dictatorship, who would become the victims of Argentina's "dirty war." With Eisenstein-like juxtapositions, the filmmakers use sound and images to break any patterns viewers are accustomed to, and treat the audience as active participants in a cinema that exists "outside and against the System" as outlined in their manifesto. Poetic, shocking, remarkably engrossing, this electric treatise on the overt and covert injustices of colonialism, the violence necessary to fight violence, and the transformative role of art in political upheaval retains its revolutionary fervor to this day.
