King Lear screening

2016-Aug-04 @ 20:00 - 21:30

The Dryden will screen King Lear (Jean-Luc Godard, U.S. 1987, 90 min., 35mm).

A global nuclear disaster has caused destruction of most great works of art, and William Shakespeare Junior the Fifth (played by the famous theatre director Peter Sellars) embarks on a mission to reconstruct his legendary ancestor's perhaps greatest tragedy, King Lear. This is the film's point of departure, and at the same time really everything that could be said about the "plot" of this masterpiece of late 20th-century cinema. What remains are devastatingly beautiful sketches of life and art, of power and impotence, of nothing and no thing, starring Jean-Luc Godard himself (as some sort of Lear), Norman Mailer (as another sort of Lear), Burgess Meredith, Woody Allen, Leos Carax, Julie Delpy, and Molly Ringwald. Without a shade of doubt, the most outrageous and original attempt to translate the Bard's words to the big screen.
