Keisatsukan (Policeman) screening

2015-Oct-27 @ 20:00 - 21:31

The Dryden will screen Keisatsukan (Policeman, Tomu Uchida, Japan 1933, 91 min., 35mm, Japanese intertitles w/ English subtitles) as a James Card Memorial Lecture and Screening with a lecture by David Bordwell.

George Eastman Museum is honored to have David Bordwell, the Jacques Ledoux Professor Emeritus of Film Studies at the University of Wisconsin—Madison and one of the most authoritative and influential figures in film studies, present the 2015 James Card Memorial Lecture and introduce Policeman. This recently rediscovered Japanese silent, shot in wonderfully expressive chiaroscuro, evokes both the tense urban gunplay of an early Hollywood gangster movie and the dark fatalism of later film noir. In a story of conflicted loyalty and duty, the Tokyo cop Itami is set against his old childhood friend Tomioka, now a member of a team of gangsters.
