Gallery Talk with Brad Temkin
In his series Rooftop, Brad Temkin draws attention to the green roof movement, in which rooftop gardens are intended to help ease the effects of city life. Rooftop gardens reduce air pollution, insulate buildings, and improve storm water management, while simultaneously improving human comfort. Temkin's photographs document these spaces with an eye toward architectural studies, contextualizing these spaces within the skylines and streets that surround them. The images provide access to gardens often hidden from view, with few people having access to enjoy the space but with many reaping the benefits of cooler, cleaner air and energy cost savings. His images draw viewers in through alluring formal gardens, ultimately highlighting the results of expanding urban sprawl on the human condition.
