The Dryden will screen English Vinglish (Gauri Shinde, India 2012, 134 min., 35mm, Hindi and English w/subtitles) as part of the Festival of Indian Cinema series.

Marking a comeback of sorts for lead actress Sridevi, who had been out of film production for nearly a decade, this film is also the feature directing debut for Gauri Shinde. Sridevi, who has nearly three hundred credits in her resume, was regarded as the first female superstar of Indian cinema and had been acting on-screen since the age of four. Here, she plays Shashi Godbole, a wife and mother traveling to New York City to prepare for her niece's wedding. There, she surreptitiously enrolls in English classes in an attempt to gain respect with her family.
