Di qiu zui hou de ye wan (Long Day's Journey into Night) screening
2019-Nov-02 @ 19:30 - 21:48
The Dryden will screen Di qiu zui hou de ye wan (Long Day's Journey into Night, Bi Gan, China 2018, 138 min., DCP, Mandarin w/subtitles).
Far removed from Eugene O'Neill's play of the same title, this noir-tinged stunner is about a lost soul, Hongwu Luo (Huang Jue), on a quest to find a missing woman from his past, Wan Qiwen (Tang Wei, Lust, Caution). Following Qiwen across Guizhou province, Luo crosses paths with a series of colorful characters, among them a prickly hairdresser played by Taiwanese superstar Sylvia Chang. Past and present blur into an engaging, hypnotic picaresque. Bi Gan follows up his knockout debut, Kaili Blues, with China's biggest arthouse hit of all time, infused with ethereal, floating Steadicam, breathtaking sets, and beautiful score.
