The Dryden will screen Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks, U.S. 1974, 93 min., 35mm) as part of the Canon series.

Mel Brooks's third feature, and his first box-office blockbuster, turns the western upside down and inside out. Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder star as our heroes and Harvey Korman is their nemesis, Hedy (er, Hedley) Lamarr. Along with their one-liners, toilet humor, and inside showbiz jokes, Brooks and his co-writers (including the late Richard Pryor) also play off all-kinds of cultural stereotypes. It's hard to imagine a more transgressive, or funnier, movie being made today.
