Bamui haebyun-eoseo honja (On the Beach at Night Alone) screening (2017-Dec-17 @ 2 p.m.)
The Dryden will screen Bamui haebyun-eoseo honja (On the Beach at Night Alone, Hong Sang-soo, South Korea/Germany 2017, 101 min., DCP, Korean w/subtitles)
This first of no less than three features that South Korean director Hong Sang-soo has released in 2017, On the Beach at Night Alone stars Kim Minhee (The Handmaiden; Right Now, Wrong Then) in the role that won her the Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlin International Film Festival. She plays an actress named Younghee, who is reeling in the aftermath of an affair with a married film director. Art imitates life in typical Hong fashion (the prolific auteur's real-life affair with Kim has recently stirred up a media frenzy in Korea), but On the Beach at Night Alone sees him confronting his personal life with a newfound emotional directness. With an incredibly raw and vulnerable performance from Kim at its center, On the Beach at Night Alone is a quietly devastating reflection on loneliness and love lost.
