The Dryden will screen America, America (Elia Kazan, U.S. 1963, 174 min., 35mm) as part of the Fourth of July series.

Elia Kazan gives cinema perhaps its most poignant portrait of the immigrant experience in this epic adaptation of his own book inspired by his uncle's trying journey from Turkey to the United States. Kazan's use of non-actors and Haskell Wexler's cinematography coalesce in a Neorealist flavor that captures the essence of the migration experience. The confluence of Kazan's classic mastery with Wexler's cutting-edge vision results in a synthesis neither too maudlin nor abstract, but a genuinely moving experience.
