Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger screening
2016-Feb-07 @ 14:00 - 15:53
The Dryden will screen Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (Sam Wanamaker, U.K. 1977, 113 min., 35mm).
Even by the standards set in 1977—the year of Star Wars and its revolution in movie special effects—Ray Harryhausen's "Dynamotion" animation technique still thrills. After many years at sea, Sinbad the sailor (Patrick Wayne, son of the Duke himself) returns to the city of Charak where he encounters all the elements of a ripping action-adventure yarn: a beautiful princess (Jane Seymour), a spellbound prince, and a pretender to the throne and his wicked, witchy mother. Harryhausen—whose next film, Clash of the Titans, would be his last—outdoes himself here with a stop-motion bestiary that includes a mechanical Minotaur, a trio of bug-eyed zombies, a giant walrus, and a towering one-horned troglodyte. Fast-paced, brilliantly colored, and great fun for the whole family.
