The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
2015-Apr-19 @ 14:00 - 16:02
At 2 p.m., the Dryden will screen The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (John Huston, U.S. 1972, 122 min., 35mm).
In this film based on the true story of Pecos County, Texas, Justice of the Peace Roy Bean, director and co-screenwriter (with John Milius) dispenses with any attempt at character discovery and paints a brawling, tumultuous, and sometimes very funny portrait of the man-myth and his life in the dying days of the West. The always watchable and screen-filling Paul Newman is Judge Roy Bean, who lords his brand of justice over both the lawless and the righteous in equal measure. Richard Moore's Technicolor cinematography captures all the action in stunning visuals including what Roger Ebert called "a Technicolor vision of Ava Gardner wandering through the ruins of the frontier."
