The Thief of Bagdad screening
2019-Dec-03 @ 19:30 - 22:05
The Dryden will screen The Thief of Bagdad (Raoul Walsh, U.S. 1924, 155 min., DCP), purportedly with live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip C. Carli, as part of the Silent Tuesdays series.
Douglas Fairbanks is in top form in his follow-up to Robin Hood (1922). Loosely adapted from One Thousand and One Nights, this story of Ahmed the thief takes a sharp turn when he falls in love with a caliph's daughter on one of his night raids. He must compete for her hand with three other princely suitors. The princess sets forth a challenge: After seven months, whoever provides her with the rarest item shall be her husband. With the original tinting restored to this print, Fairbanks's athletic antics are matched by William Cameron Menzies's eye-popping sets and state-of-the-art special effects.
