Bronenosets Potemkin (Battleship Potemkin) screening
2019-Nov-12 @ 19:30 - 20:36
The Dryden will screen Bronenosets Potemkin (Battleship Potemkin, Sergei Eisenstein, Soviet Union 1925, 66 min., 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series.
Consistently voted one of the best films of all time, this classic memorializes the struggle of the First Russian Revolution in 1905 and its aftermath. Conceived by the Soviet government to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the revolt, it was originally intended to show many events that happened in that fateful year. Due to time constraints and deteriorating weather, director Sergei Eisenstein abandoned much of the original script and focused on the single episode of the Potemkin and the resulting massacre in Odessa. Eisenstein used his philosophy of editing and montage to make the Odessa Steps sequence one of the most enduring in world cinema.
