Nude on the Moon: Films by Doris Wishman and Peggy Ahwesh
2019-May-02 @ 19:00 - 21:00
Some thirty years ago, the artist Peggy Ahwesh began to cultivate a fascination with the films of Doris Wishman, the prolific director behind grindhouse gems like Nude on the Moon (1961), Bad Girls Go to Hell (1965), and Let Me Die a Woman (1977). Determined to meet the doyenne of the skin flick in the flesh, Ahwesh flew down from New York with fellow filmmaker M.M. Serra in 1994 to surprise Wishman at her workplace, the Pink Pussycat Boutique in Coconut Grove, Miami. The fruits of this encounter would go into the making of The Films of Doris Wishman, a one-issue zine produced by Ahwesh in 1995. This program celebrates the 2019 release of the reprinted zine by Inpatient Press and Light Industry, with additional heretofore unreleased material documenting the encounter between Wishman, Ahwesh and other artists.
Our screening includes Peggy Ahwesh's The Color of Love (1994), an erotic found-footage tribute to Wishman, as well as Wishman's own Nude on the Moon (1961). Light Industry's Thomas Beard will introduce the program, and copies of The Films of Doris Wishman, edited by Peggy Ahwesh, will be available.
