Reversal of Fortune screening (2019-Jan-29 @ 7:30 p.m.)
2019-Jan-29 @ 19:30 - 21:21
The Dryden will screen Reversal of Fortune (Barbet Schroeder, U.S. 1990, 111 min., 35mm) as part of the Glenn Close series.
Narrating the film from her comatose state, Sunny von Bülow (Glenn Close) tells the story of her husband, Claus (Jeremy Irons), their unhappy marriage, and her hypoglycemic condition. After Sunny falls into a coma twice within a year, Claus is convicted for attempted murder, since he stands to inherit $14 million from his wife. He seeks out Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) to handle his appeal. Dershowitz, believing him guilty, charges him a large amount of money, which would allow him to defend two youths in a separate case. As he becomes more involved with the von Bülow case, however, Dershowitz sees that things are not as clear-cut as he had imagined, and he must wrestle with his own conscience and morality. Based on Dershowitz's own memoir, this film garnered Academy Award nominations for Best Actor (Irons), Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
