JayceLand's Weekly Rochester Events #208: Not Long for All of Idaho
Oh, if only I had started doing this whole thing on
August 24, 2000
instead of when I did so that #123 would fall on exactly 1/2/03. Plus, last week my car rolled over 123,000 miles. What was I thinking! I disgust myself sometimes. Heck, if only I had started this on every single day of every year for all of time then the week numbers would always line up. Stupid stupid stupid.
Ok, so anyway ...
I went out to Schenectady for Christmas on the 21st for my uncle's Christmas party then I left for Boston on the 27th and got back on the first. Since my house was empty for two weeks I thought that since you can just look up the address on the Internet that I'd just neglect to mention it until I got back. On Saturday night I went to
The Larkin
(199 Lark St., Albany, NY)
and saw a quite good acoustic musician named
Sam Lowry.
After that I went to
Valentine's
(17 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY)
and saw
Acoustic Trauma,
The Apostles,
and
Erin Harkes and the Rebounds.
Acoustic Trauma was very cool ... I thought they sounded like celtic-influenced experimental 3-piece rock. The Apostles did just okay punk-rock, and Erin Harkes did some awsome 3-piece acoustic rock.
I'll have more later. I'm watching the "I Love the '80's" marathon on VH1 so I can't write too much now.
Antwone Fisher
- Some guy had a shitty childhood and turns himself around in the Navy.
About Schmidt
- Probably a decent movie about a guy who has to pretty much completely start over after retiring.
Tonight at
Monty's Krown
(875 Monroe Ave.)
is
Ossinus
starting around 10:30.
Tonight at
Comix Cafe
(3450 Winton Pl.)
it's
Jamie Lissow
with
Mike Glosek
and
Steve Burr
starting at 8:30--also on Friday at 8 and 10:45, then without Steve on Saturday at 8 and 10:45 and likewise on Sunday at 8:30.
Tonight it's
Karaoke
with the original
Sugar Bear
at
Drinks by Mary Dawn
(535 S. Clinton)
starting around 10:30.
Daily Perks
(389 Gregory St.)
is hosting an
Acoustic Open Jam
from 8 to 10. For this one, there's no microphones and it's designed to be more of a true jam.
For some of that old fashioned modern rock, check out
Better Days
at
Norton's Pub
(1730 Goodman St.)
probably starting around 9:30.
If you'd like to wind down to some acoustic covers,
John Akers
is you man up at
Johnny's Irish Pub
(1382 Culver Rd., still smoke-free)
starting around 8 or 9 or so.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will be showing
Badlands starting at 8.
A polarizing movie among reviewers, it's about a girl and a guy who take off on the run for murder.
In case you're shut in tonight (or tomorrow), check out
I'm going to make a drug with my mind
on cable public access (channel 15 on Time Warner) at 11:30 p.m. featuring
Pisspot the Bunny
interviewing local and out-of-town bands.
It looks to be a good show at
Richmond's
(21 Richmond St.)
with the decent punk rock of
El Destructo,
heavier modern rock of
Defenbombed,
and more modern rock with
Tyrones
starting around 10 or so.
If it's clean-cut modern rock you're looking for, check out
Better Days
at
Alexander Street Pub
(291 Alexander St.)
probably starting around 9:30.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will be showing
Days of Heaven starting at 8.
I'm not sure what the bug up the butt of the Dryden film programmer is, but here's another story of love gone astray when it's complicated by money and jealousy.
There's apparently a
Spoken Word Open Mic Poetry Night
at
Pythodd Jazz Room at the Heritage House
(130 Spring St.)
from around 6 to around 10. It used to be on Thursdays but I guess they moved it.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will be showing
The Italian Job starting at 8.
A clever little film about stealing gold in Italy, but I'm drawn to it because of tales of its excellent car chase.
Tonight from 8 to 10 is an
Open-Mic Comedy Night
at
Daily Perks
(389 Gregory St.)
While once it was a workshop type of environment, it's now more-or-less a regular open mic ... by default it's still a place to try out new stuff.
I guess
Water Street Music Hall
(204 N. Water St.)
is doing something they're calling
First Chance Wednesday
tonight with hippie-groove-rock featuring
Hangman,
South Central,
and
Mad Sally
starting around 9:30 or 10.
