JayceLand's Weekly Rochester Events #171: That's One Unpopular Car, Clement
Dang ... it's late on Wednesday (well, I want to do other stuff tonight and I really want to be done with the website.)
Just so I wasn't totally lying, I actually went to Trivia Quiz at
The Old Toad
(277 Alexander St.)
this week. Only one other guy I knew was there so we joined one of the winning teams. They really weren't much fun ... they were way too serious about winning. The only excitement I had was that I won a "beer question"--you yell out the answer and win a beer. It was one of the "who or what am I" things where they give clues as to the identity of someone or some thing. As soon as they said, "I am 145 feet tall," I yelled out "Statue of Liberty" and won myself a beer. How very exciting, eh?
On Saturday I went around town and eventually settled at
The Bug Jar
(219 Monroe Ave.)
to see
QUiTTERS,
The Shams
and
Dan Melchoir's Broke Revue.
All of them were really good. When I left around 2:30, there was fog covering some of the buildings downtown. I went to Wegmans to get black-and-white film but I couldn't get to it behind the gate in the Video Department so I went to CVS and bought it there instead. I spent the evening taking pictures of the fog around town ... until about 4 when I went home and crashed.
Tekulvi
and
The Beligerents
will be at
Monty's Krown
(875 Monroe Ave.)
starting around 10:30.
If worse comes to worse you can always see, hear, and/or otherwise participate in
Karaoke
with
Sugar Bear
at
Drinks by Mary Dawn
(535 S. Clinton)
starting around 10:30.
Daily Perks
(389 Gregory St.)
is hosting an
Acoustic Open Jam
from 8 to 10. For this one, there's no microphones and it's designed to be more of a true jam.
Over at
Mercury
(171 St. Paul, formerly Red)
is the jazz band
Viva Knieval
from 8 to 11.
I'm still curious to see how jazz plays out at Mercury.
There's apparently a
Spoken Word Open Mic Poetry Night
at
Pythodd Jazz Room at the Heritage House
(130 Spring St.)
starting around 8 or so.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will have a presentation of some short cartoons by
Bill Plimpton
and
Don Hertzfeldt
starting at 8 featuring:
Tonight from 8 to 10 at
Daily Perks
(389 Gregory St.)
is the new-to-me folk-ish singer
Maria Gillard
with the Alaskan, odd, political, generally left-wing folk singer
Ethan Daniel Davidson
The last time I saw him, I got some of his CD's but then he mailed a couple more to me later in the year in plain wrapping--shortly after the anthrax scare--so it took me a while to figure out who he was again before I realized it was probably okay to open the package.
Meddling Kids
will be at
Acme Bar & Pizza
(495 Monroe Ave.)
starting around 10:15. I missed them in the past when they played at Tremors because, well, it's Tremors. I hear the band-side is okay, though.
In their last show with their guitarist Carl,
Eddie Nebula and the Plague,
The Realistics
and
Veluxe
will be at
The Bug Jar
(219 Monroe Ave.)
starting around 10:45.
Trivia Quiz continues at
The Old Toad
(277 Alexander St.)
My interest is waning, but I keep going and we still haven't won--whether we have a few people or a whole bunch.. We've been within a couple questions of winning, but so has everyone else. It all gets started a little after 9.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will be showing
Popeye starting at 8.
Robin Williams (prior to his make-everyone-cry days) plays the famous sailorman.
Tonight at
The Bug Jar
(219 Monroe Ave.)
is
the out-of-town
Tomorrow's Caveman
with the eternally local
McFadden's Parachute
starting around 10:45.
In case you do listen, it is indeed part of the
A Whole Lotta Shakin
show at
WITR.
As of a few months ago,
Java's
(16 Gibb Street)
still has open mic poetry downstairs starting around 9:30.
Tonight from 8 to 10 is an interesting "new-material-only"
Open-Mic Comedy Night
at
Daily Perks
(389 Gregory St.)
I think they're making it into a workshop type of environment.
