JayceLand's Weekly Rochester Events #98: Happy Birthday, Mrs. Grant

Doh! I kind of blew it because this weekend is Thanksgiving and last weeks turkey survey was supposed to go with that. This is starting to get important because I'm now getting into the "big time": both Google and AltaVista list this page on the first page of hits when you search for rochester weekly events.

As the election debate rages on, I'm clinging to just a couple ideas. First, nobody seems to understand that any manner of measurement (including counting) is prone to error. The larger the amount and the more complex the task, the more likely that error is. Second, I think we've learned from this election that the state of Florida is stupid -- they can't count accurately; they use error-prone punched cards to vote with; they can't follow simple instructions to punch exactly one hole next to the candidate they want elected; they wait until an election hangs in the balance until they reconsider their voting methods; they want more Cuban immigrants coming to America except for those who are not adorable children; they live in a corridor of hurricanes and still build houses that can't withstand it.

Thanksgiving

If you have the desire to go out tonight, pickin's are slim.

Milestones (170 East Ave.) will have Spacetrucker starting around 10:30-ish. Once again I know nothing about the band.

Tonight at the nearly Gothic, cold-war themed Red (171 St. Paul) is the rockabilly band The Frantic Flattops with The Hi-Risers.

I'll miss it, but for the rest of you, dinner at California Rollin' at Village Gate Square (274 N. Goodman St.) This week's specials, straight from the mailing list's mouth are:
  • Spiked Crab Roll (spiked with wasabi) consisting of snowcrab, Japanese mayonnaise, avocado, cucumber, seaweed salad and wasabi roe.
  • Tsunami Roll consisting of whitefish, scallions and teriyaki sauce.
  • Pinchy Roll consisting of lobster, Japanese mayonnaise, cucumber and avocado.

Memorial Art Gallery (500 University Ave., near Goodman St.) is hosting Jazz Fridays with Vince Ercolamento Trio from 6 to 9. $5, free to MAG members and students with University of Rochester ID.

The Dryden Theater at George Eastman House (900 East Ave.) will be showing Roger & Me where Michael Moore heads to Flint, Michigan to seek GM Chairman Roger B. Smith to talk about the fate of the city. The show starts at 8.

I checked out Dueling Pianos from Vegas at Rhythm (formerly Lloyd's at 289 Alexander St.) a few weeks ago. It was pretty standard tourist fare -- simple, crude fun. It starts as part of happy hour.

Tonight is the preview of A Christmas Carol at 7:30 at Geva (75 Woodbury Blvd.)

Karaoke with Sugar Bear at Boston Brew Company (251 Exchange Blvd.)

Nuts and Bolts returns this week to Johnny's Smoke Free Bar (1382 Culver Rd.) They start at 8 and they're back to charging $5, but they're probably moving to monthly and may move to Christian's in Village Gate soon.
