{"id":159,"date":"2008-07-24T20:45:49","date_gmt":"2008-07-25T00:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayceland.com\/blog\/archive\/2008\/07\/24\/vanishing-point-at-the-dryden\/"},"modified":"2008-07-30T14:14:47","modified_gmt":"2008-07-30T18:14:47","slug":"vanishing-point-at-the-dryden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jayceland.com\/blog\/archive\/2008\/07\/24\/vanishing-point-at-the-dryden\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanishing Point at the Dryden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although it was a double feature, I decided to go late to see just <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0067927\/\">Vanishing Point<\/a><\/strong> at <strong>Dryden Theater<\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastmanhouse.org\/\">George Eastman House<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=900+East+Ave,+Rochester,+NY&amp;ll=43.15138,-77.58015&amp;spn=.01,.02&amp;hl=en\">900 East Ave.<\/a>).  On the surface, it was a simple tale of a guy running from the law in a fast car.  But my take on it was that the guy &mdash; Kowalski &mdash; represented freedom itself.  Super Soul &mdash; the black, blind DJ &mdash; seems to recognize this, and even spells it right out.<\/p>\n<p>I found Kowalski's encounters on the road to be one-dimensional allegories where you can just substitute \"freedom\" for \"Kowalski\":<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At every turn, the law is out to stop freedom.<\/li>\n<li>The hippie couple gets along with freedom.<\/li>\n<li>Racists try to stop Super Soul from talking about freedom.<\/li>\n<li>The gay couple tries to rob freedom &mdash; perhaps out of desperation.<\/li>\n<li>Freedom goes all over the desert.<\/li>\n<li>The religious group sees freedom only as a malicious stranger.<\/li>\n<li>When the law finally wins, freedom dies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although it was a double feature, I decided to go late to see just Vanishing Point at Dryden Theater at George Eastman House (900 East Ave.).
