Torn Curtain screening

2017-Nov-17 @ 19:30 - 21:38

The Dryden will screen Torn Curtain (Alfred Hitchcock, U.S. 1966, 128 min., 35mm) as part of the Hitchcock in Winter series.

Hitchcock's fiftieth film unfolds in the middle of Cold War espionage. Paul Newman, in his only collaboration with the master of suspense, plays a controversial American nuclear scientist whose supposed defection to East Germany causes a furor. Dutiful assistant and fiancée Julie Andrews tags along but finds herself torn between her sense of patriotic duty and the man she loves. Will his shadowy motives become unveiled, or will she be forced to choose? Watch closely for the shocking highlight of the film: Newman's prolonged fight to death with a communist agent, a sequence that makes memorable use of a gas oven.
