Science and Sustainability: Mathematical Modeling to Support Management Decision Making in the Great Lakes

2017-Oct-18 @ 15:25 - 16:40

Joseph Atkinson will discuss Science and Sustainability: Mathematical Modeling to Support Management Decision Making in the Great Lakes in Gavett Hall #301 on the UofR Campus.

Prof. Joseph Atkinson, Professor of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering; Director, Great Lakes Program, University at Buffalo, will talk on how mechanistic mathematical models can provide a critical component in natural resource management, allowing "what if" scenario testing and playing a key role in adaptive management. This talk will provide an overview of the use of such models, with a focus on issues relevant to the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario in particular. A general overview of mechanistic mathematical modeling will be presented, along with applications to several specific examples related to algae bloom concerns. Recent and current work in Lake Ontario will be highlighted.
