Saraba hakobune (Farewell to the Ark) screening
2017-Dec-27 @ 19:30 - 21:37
The Dryden will screen Saraba hakobune (Farewell to the Ark, Shûji Terayama, Japan 1984, 127 min., 35mm; Japanese w/subtitles) as part of the Terayama series.
Terayama's final feature, released only after the director's untimely death in 1983 at the age of 47, blends all his previous personal interests—the power of memory, the demands of society, the clash between tradition and new ways—into a seamless, visually gorgeous allegory. Farewell to the Ark is a tale of village life, magic, forbidden love, and clocks that that make the sun rise and set. It is also a testament of an artist who knew he was dying at the time of filming and made one last desperate attempt to pour all his experience and expertise, all the hundreds and hundreds of literary works and films he had created, into one last artistic statement.
