Outer and Inner Space, Lupe screenings
2017-Oct-18 @ 19:30 - 20:39
The Dryden Outer and Inner Space (Andy Warhol, U.S. 1966, 33 min., 2 x 16mm), and Lupe (Andy Warhol, U.S. 1966, 36 min., 2 x 16mm) as part of the Warhol series.
Edie Sedgwick, Warhol's favorite superstar, appears in more than ten of his films; Outer and Inner Space and Lupe are two of the most conceptually complex. Both consist of two reels shown together side-by-side. Projected thus, Outer and Inner Space becomes a quadruple portrait of Sedgwick, since each reel shows her seated next to her own video image, to whose sound she sometimes reacts. Shot in luscious color, Lupe is supposedly a biopic about Lupe Valez based on Kenneth Anger's story about her suicide in Hollywood Babylon. Billy Name gives Edie a haircut, and she does her nails, while in the adjacent reel she moves about a luxurious apartment in the Dakota, the famous New York City apartment building. Watch for the unexpected ending!
