The Dryden will screen Lust for Life (Vincente Minnelli, U.S. 1956, 122 min., 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series.
Vincente Minnelli's bold, colorful biography of Vincent Van Gogh is anchored by the vibrant performances of Kirk Douglas as Vincent and James Donald as his brother, Theo. Van Gogh, following an unsuccessful preaching career, finds himself drawn to the people of the town and the work that they do, which leads him to find drawing and, ultimately, painting. He is influenced by his relationships with painters Anton Mauve (Noel Purcell) and Paul Gaugin (Anthony Quinn), but the beautiful images he paints belie a struggle with depression. Douglas was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance and Quinn won his second Oscar in five years for his.
