Foolish Wives screening
2018-Jan-16 @ 19:30 - 21:30
The Dryden will screen Foolish Wives (Erich von Stroheim, U.S. 1922, 120 min., 35mm) as part of the Silent Tuesdays and Erich von Stroheim series.
In a devious plot to swindle money and maintain the social position of himself and his two cousins within Monte Carlo society, the flirtatious Count Sergius Karamzin attempts to seduce the wife of an important American diplomat. Described by Variety at the time of its release as "frankly salacious" and heavily censored in many U.S. states, Foolish Wives was a surprising success for its producer, Universal Film Manufacturing Company. One of the studio's most expensive, extravagantly produced, and morally controversial films of the time, it was and still is one of von Stroheim's most celebrated and divisive films.
