Cimarron screening

2018-Jan-02 @ 19:30 - 21:33

The Dryden will screen Cimarron (Wesley Ruggles, U.S. 1931, 123 min., 35mm) as part of the Academy Awards at 90 series.

Voted the outstanding production (Best Picture) for 1930/1931, Cimarron stampeded its way to the podium like Ben-Hur's chariots rolling over the competition in 1959, and Titanic swamping every other picture in 1997. Big and sprawling, this screen adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel centers on one family's role in the founding of Oklahoma. Silent screen star Richard Dix received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Yancy Cravat, a man whose great ambitions are always short-circuited by his incurable wanderlust. Disappearing for years at a time, he leaves his beloved wife Sabra (Irene Dunne) to hold the fort and keep the family together. Sabra is the enduring strength at the center of this saga, becoming a force for change in her own right, and always saving a place by the hearth for her errant partner.
