Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) screening (2018-Apr-16 @ 1:30 p.m.)
2018-Apr-16 @ 13:30 - 14:28
The Dryden will screen Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Robert Wiene, Germany 1920, 58 min., 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays, and After Bedlam series. Do yourself a favor if you've only ever seen the stupefyingly inferior video copies out there and come see a real film print.
The gruesome images of Cesare, the carnival somnambulist, his sinister keeper Dr. Caligari, and the hallucinatory, distorted world which they inhabit have become cinema icons since this film appeared on screens almost one hundred years ago, chilling audiences worldwide and continuing to fascinate viewers today. Dr. Caligari not only brought the concept of expressionism into cinematic terms, but also re-established Germany as one of the great international film industries. Few films have visualized insanity in such unsettlingly normal terms.
