Weekly Rochester Events #666 Starting Thursday, October 13, 2011
Today from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Memorial Art Gallery (500 University Ave., near Goodman St.) is the ArtAbility Rochester Expo, teaching "how art can be made accessible to people with vision loss through audio description and touch tours."

The Dryden Theater at George Eastman House (900 East Ave.) will be showing The Others starting at 8 p.m. and again on Sunday at 7 p.m. The only way I'd attend if it were free ... which it is for Eastman House members on tonight's screening. Hopefully the quality of the film and its suspense does not hinge on a silly plot twist.

This evening around 7 p.m. at The Flying Squirrel Community Space (285 Clarissa St., formerly the Flower City Elks Lodge) is a screening of Cointelpro 101 — a film about the confusing COINTELPRO acronym and its place in "the state's strategy to prevent movements and communities from overturning white supremacy and creating racial justice." Producer and former political prisoner Claude Marks will be on hand to discuss the film.

The Dryden Theater at George Eastman House (900 East Ave.) will be showing También la lluvia(Even the Rain) starting at 8 p.m. Having seen the trailer, I'm fascinated by this dark tale of "a cocky young director whose political sympathies run a distant second to his all-consuming passion for filmmaking. Shooting a revisionist account of Columbus's conquest of the Americas in the cheap-labor mecca of Bolivia, [the director] soon learns that history isn't the only thing that needs revising: rising opposition to corporate theft of local water resources becomes difficult to ignore. A film that questions the sincerity and priorities of monied movie producers invading the third world — that is, an ongoing critique of itself."

Dave Wetzel will be at Lori's Natural Foods (900 Jefferson Rd.) today from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to discuss Cod Liver Oil — It's History, Manufacturing (Past and Present) and the Health Benefits. Smells like snake oil pseudoscience to me ... and, naturally, Wikipedia's article has a heavy talk page discussing whether the main article is factual. Personally: just show me the links to the peer-reviewed studies that demonstrate positive effects. And if there are benefits, are they better than just eating fish?

Over at The Bug Jar (219 Monroe Ave.) starting around 10:30 p.m. is good and unique acoustic soloist Small Houses, nice sounding acourtic duo Dave and Marrissa, and N. Moore and the Helping Hands.

Tonight at The Bug Jar (219 Monroe Ave.) is good, folky acoustic-rock from John Davey, The Branch Davidians, and Ryan Webster starting around 9 p.m.

This morning at 7:30 a.m. in the cafeteria overlooking the arboretum in
Bausch and Lomb
(140 Stone St.) is the Artists Breakfast Group meeting ... anyone interested in art or creativity is invited.
The Dryden Theater at George Eastman House (900 East Ave.) will be showing The Tingler starting at 8 p.m. in which an "LSD-tripping scientist [played by Vincent Price] finds the perfect experimental subject in the deaf-mute wife of a cinematheque operator: she can't scream and so, in her death throes, unleashes the Tingler upon sleepy Los Angeles."

DreamHost Web Hosting I use DreamHost to run JayceLand.com. Click the ad to buy hosting and I'll get money to run my site. Hooray!
Join Zipcar and get $25 in free driving! Area ZipCars are located by the Rush Rhees Library at UofR, near Strong Hospital, and near the Eastman School of Music, so if you don't want to waste all that money on gas, insurance, and repairs, this is the way to do it. Plus, we each get some money as credit for driving.
This page is Jason Olshefsky's list of things to do in Rochester, NY and the surrounding region (including nearby towns Irondequoit, Webster, Penfield, Pittsford, Victor, Henrietta, Gates, Chili, Greece, and Charlotte, and occasionally other places in Monroe County and the Western New York region.) It is updated every week with daily listings for entertainment, activities, performances, movies, music, bands, comedy, improv, poetry, storytelling, lectures, discussions, debates, theater, plays, and generally fun things to do.
Music events are usually original bands with occasional cover bands and DJ's with musical styles including punk, emo, ska, swing, rock, rock-and-roll, alternative, metal, jazz, blues, noise band, experimental music, folk, acoustic, and "world-beat."
Events listed take place during the day, in the evenings, or as part of the city's nightlife as listed.
Although I'm reluctant to admit it, it is a Rochester blog and I'm essentially blogging about Rochester events.
I also tend to express opinions, review past events, make reviews, speak of philosophy or of a philosophical nature, discuss humanity and creativity.
Oh, and it's spelled JayceLand with no space and a capital L, not Jayce Land, Jaycee Land, Jace Land, Jase Land, Joyce Land, Jayce World, Jayceeland, Jaceland, Jaseland, Joyceland, Jayceworld, Jayceeworld, Jaceworld, Jaseworld, nor Joyceworld. (Now if you misspell it in some search engine, you at least get a shot at finding it.)
It's also not to be confused with
Jake's World or JakesWorld which is a site of a Rochester animator.
While I'm on the topic of keywords for search engines, this update includes information for Thursday, October 13, 2011 (Thu, Oct 13, 2011, 10/13/2011, or 10/13/11) Friday, October 14, 2011 (Fri, Oct 14, 2011, 10/14/2011, or 10/14/11) Saturday, October 15, 2011 (Sat, Oct 15, 2011, 10/15/2011, or 10/15/11) Sunday, October 16, 2011 (Sun, Oct 16, 2011, 10/16/2011, or 10/16/11) Monday, October 17, 2011 (Mon, Oct 17, 2011, 10/17/2011, or 10/17/11) Tuesday, October 18, 2011 (Tue, Oct 18, 2011, 10/18/2011, or 10/18/11) and Wednesday, October 19, 2011 (Wed, Oct 19, 2011, 10/19/2011, or 10/19/11).
