JayceLand's Weekly Rochester Events #189: Currier Before Ives
Hmm ... there's some essay brewing in my head, but I'll take some time to try and do it right ... if at all. Anyway, I dont' have much to say of interest for now. I did finally get out and bike to
Le Club Shock
at
Analog Shock
(674 South Ave.)
and
The Bug Jar
(219 Monroe Ave.)
on Tuesday to see the shows there. Too bad I get so tired lately and I had to go home around midnight. Oh, but right by Analog Shock is
Karrie's new bar
(666 South Ave.)
which will open on September 6. I don't know what the place is called yet ...
What else ... I've got a
Discover card
and you can now take your
CashBack bonus
and double it as a gift certificate. Well, anyway, the only thing I was interested into at all was the overpriced junk they sell at
The Sharper Image.
Anyway, I picked up one of those
stick-on cellular antennas
and a refurbished
Fire Flite remote controlled plane.
I tried it out on Tuesday and it was cool for a while, but I crashed it a dozen times and the wing hit the propeller and got shredded a bit. I'll have to fix it quite a bit, or get another
wing kit.
In local news, last week,
Janice and Friends
didn't show at
Johnny's Irish Pub
(1382 Culver Rd., still smoke-free)
last week so I assume they're on the second-to-last Thursday rather than the third Thursday as I had thought ... therefore, I'll keep it on this weeks list and see if I'm right. What looks to be cool is
F'loom
at the
Verb Café
at
Writers and Books
(740 University Ave.)
on Friday. They were supposed to show up in May of 2001 but I didn't get a chance to see if they did. Nonetheless, they've got some sound clips on their site which are ... uhh ... odd.
M O V I E S
Serving Sara
- Some guy serves some chick divorce papers and comedy ensues.
Simone
- A director creates a simulated actress capable of love who searches for the friggin' Blue Fairy to make her into a real girl like some dumb Pinocchio ripoff, only to end up underwater and it's just a statue. Oh, then weird alien-like beings come and make her wish come true for a day.
Undisputed
- A top boxer is accused of rape and sent to prison where he boxes with the top prison boxer for money.
Over at
Jillian's
(Corner of Commercial St. and Mill St.)
is apparently a comedy night (which got off to quite the rocky start) with
Mark Saldanha,
Porter
and probably a few more. I'm guessing it starts around 9.
If worse comes to worse you can always see, hear, and/or otherwise participate in
Karaoke
with
Sugar Bear
at
Drinks by Mary Dawn
(535 S. Clinton)
starting around 10:30.
Over at
Johnny's Irish Pub
(1382 Culver Rd., still smoke-free)
is another
Nuts and Bolts
(42 Girard St.)
spinoff with sketch comedy from
Janice and Friends
starting around 8:30. I'm pretty sure they charge $5.
The decent groove rock of
Ned Pepper
will be at
Fantastic Records
(3400 Monroe Ave.)
for an in-store performance starting around 7.
If you're out late, check out
Better Days
up on the roof at
The Centers at High Falls
(60 Brown's Race)
They technically start around 10 but it's more fun later ... of course, if it rains they move it inside and ruin the fun.
In case you're shut in tonight (or tomorrow), check out
I'm going to make a drug with my mind
on cable public access (channel 15 on Time Warner) at 11:30 p.m. featuring
Pisspot the Bunny
interviewing local and out-of-town bands.
In case you're curious, it's
Alla Turca
at
Lola Bistro and Bar
(630 Monroe Ave.)
tonight and every Friday from 10:30 to 2.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will be showing
Pickup on South Street starting at 8.
Richard Widmark will be on hand to introduce his film and answer questions. Tonight is a classic of film noir ... a pickpocket picks the wallet containing secret microfilm ... yada yada yada.
Oh yeah, it's $10 or $8 for members/students.
Peter Frampton
will be at
High Falls Festival Site
(Browns Race and Commercial St.)
starting around 7 ... er ... I guess that's when they'll let you in. I don't know how much and whatnot, so good luck.
Tonight is the
St. Paul Quarter Festival
(St. Paul Street)
from 5 to 11 featuring
Spacetrucker
and
Uncle Plum.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will be showing
Tron starting at 8.
Can you believe Tron came out in 1982? What an odd little film ... and especially from Disney.
There's apparently a
Spoken Word Open Mic Poetry Night
at
Pythodd Jazz Room at the Heritage House
(130 Spring St.)
from around 6 to around 10. It used to be on Thursdays but I guess they moved it.
The Dryden Theater
at
George Eastman House
(900 East Ave.)
will be showing
Madigan starting at 8.
Maybe I'm just cheating or maybe the writing is improving, but the Eastman House description had this to say: "This long overlooked thriller is a brutally realistic glimpse into the world of New York City policemen. [Richard] Widmark plays a cop so distracted and alienated from his own life that he loses his gun to a murderer and then must retrieve it after it has been used to kill two of his fellow officers."
As of a few months ago,
Java's
(16 Gibb Street)
still has open mic poetry downstairs starting around 9:30.
Tonight from 8 to 10 is an
Open-Mic Comedy Night
at
Daily Perks
(389 Gregory St.)
While once it was a workshop type of environment, the comics now have to force that behavior ... by default it's a place to try out new stuff.
Dan Liberto
(of the The Comedy Company)
is back with another
Open Mic Comedy
up at
Penny Arcade
(4785 Lake Ave.)
starting probably around 10:30
